Louisiana Tech rallies for 75-67 victory over UTSA

HOUSTON – Louisiana Tech outscored UTSA, 44-33, in the second half to claim a 75-67 win over the Roadrunners on day one of the Gene Hackerman Invitational Friday at Autry Court.
Freshman forward Destiny Brown (right) held game-high honors with 16 points, while sophomore guard Terrie Davis and senior center Lacy Mingee added 14 and 13 points, respectively. Junior forward Vivian Ewalefo led UTSA with seven rebounds and chipped in with six points.
Leading the Lady Techsters in scoring were senior guards Tasha Williams and Aarica Ray-Boyd with 15 points apiece. Williams also led the team with seven rebounds.
UTSA dipped to 4-3 on the season; meanwhile, Louisiana Tech improves to 2-1.
Freshman guard Eboni Mangum’s lay-up with 14:29 in the first half gave the Lady Techsters a 15-10 lead. This would be the largest lead for La Tech in the first frame.
The Roadrunners used a 5-0 run to take their first lead of the game (21-19), when Davis hit a 3-point basket. UTSA built a seven point lead (33-26) on two free throws by Davis with 3:30 left in the frame, and eventually held a 34-31 halftime lead.
The Lady Techsters used a pair of back-to-back, three-point plays to regain the lead (39-38) at the 15-minute mark of the second half. Midway through the half, La Tech built a 10 point lead (55-45) when senior center Margaret DeCiman connected on a free throw with 11:03 left in game.
UTSA rallied to within within four points when senior guard Nicole Dunson hit a jumper from the left corner at the 2:09 mark. This would be the closet the Runners would get for the remainder of the game.
The Lady Techsters sealed the game with free throws down the stretch for the final, 75-67.
UTSA returns to action Saturday against Davidson, which fell 63-52 to Rice, in the consolation game at 5:30 p.m.
