Islanders use hot shooting to stop UTSA, 77-59

SAN ANTONIO – The Texas A&M-Corpus Christi Islanders connected on 52.5 percent from the floor in scoring a 77-59 win over the UTSA Roadrunners on Wednesday night at the Convocation Center in men’s college basketball action.
Texas A&M-Corpus Christi improved its mark to 3-1 on the season, while UTSA dropped to 2-2 on the season.
UTSA freshman guard Eric Young (right) led the team with 14 points, while junior forward Gabe Bernard chipped in with 13 points. Sophomore guard Roderick Rodgers had a team-high six rebounds.
“We didn’t compete the way you would need to beat a team like Corpus Christi,” said UTSA coach Tim Carter. “The Islanders hit us early and we were never able to recover.”
Junior forward Cedric Smith’s 19 points led the way for the Islanders, while junior center Chris Daniels scored 14 points, Seth Engelken added 11. Leading rebounder for TAMU-CC was Daniels with five boards.
UTSA began the game scoring the first four points, when freshman guard Aldric Reynolds nailed a 3-point basket followed by a made free throw by freshman center Nkem Ojougboh.
Texas A&M-Corpus Christi took the lead with a 14-0 run with 13:30 left in the first half. Junior guard Josh Washington led the run with six points on back-to-back 3-pointers.
The Islanders continued to roll on numerous Roadrunners turnovers to give Texas A&M-Corpus Christi its largest lead of the game at 25-11 at the 7:49 mark.
The Roadrunners trimmed the lead to 36-26 on 3-point basket from junior guard Kyile Byrd from the right wing with 2:07 left in the half. UTSA trailed 38-26 at halftime.
UTSA could get no closer than 10 points in the second half as the Islanders connected on 15 of 30 second half field goal attempts.
For the game the Islanders outscored UTSA 40-20 in the paint and had 26 points off of 27 Roadrunners turnovers.
Texas A&M-Corpus Christi shot well from the field, including 56 percent in the first half, while the Roadrunners managed to 44.4% for the game.
UTSA will continue its four-game homestand when they host Murray State on Saturday, Dec. 3 at 2 p.m. in the Convocation Center.
