UTSA falls at Texas A&M-Corpus Christi, 56-44

CORPUS CHRISTI, Texas – Texas A&M-Corpus Christi’s second half surge aided the Islanders to a 56-44 win over the UTSA women’s basketball team Tuesday night at the American Bank Center, snapping the Roadrunners two-game winning streak.
UTSA dropped to 4-2 on the season, while Texas A&M-Corpus Christi gets its first win of the season and improve to 1-4.
The Roadrunners were led by senior guard Nicole Dunson’s 13 points, while freshman guard Monica Gibbs scored a career-high 11 points and nine rebounds.
Senior forward Terra Andrews and junior guard Kirbria Lewis led TAMU-CC with 15 points apiece. Andrews held game-high honor with 13 boards.
UTSA led 11-7 on a Dunson pull-up jumper from the free throw line with 7:47 left in the first half. Junior guard Brittany Fowler’s lay-up gave the Islanders their first lead of the game with less than a minute to go in the half at 19-17 and they would not look back.
Dunson led the Runners with seven points in the half, while senior center Lacy Mingee and Gibbs added four points apiece. UTSA ended the first half shooting 33 percent, while Texas A&M-Corpus Christi shot 29 percent.
TAMU-CC opened the second half with a 10-5 run (31-24) with 14:19 to go in the game when Lewis nailed a three-point basket from the left wing.
The Islanders extended their lead to 11 points (43-32) with 6:48 left in the game when Andrews connected on two free-throws.
Senior forward Katie Sandefur trimmed the deficit to 50-42 with 1:09 left, but this would be the closest UTSA would get for the reminder of the game.
For the game, UTSA shot 34 percent from the floor, while TAMU-CC shot 32 percent. The Islanders out-rebounded the Roadrunners 48-33
UTSA hits the road this weekend as they face Louisiana Tech in Rice's Gene Hackerman Classic on Friday, Dec. 2, at 5 p.m.
