Destiny Brown’s 32 Points Help Lead UTSA Past Dallas Diesel, 85-78

SAN ANTONIO – The University of Texas at San Antonio women’s basketball team closed out exhibition play with an 85-78 win over the Dallas Diesel, behind freshman forward Destiny Brown’s (right) career-high 32 point outing. Joining Brown in double-digits was junior forward Vivian Ewalefo with 20 points and sophomore guard Terrie Davis with 10 points.
UTSA opened up an early 8-2 lead with 17:28 left in the first half. Brown scored all eight points during the run. The Dallas Diesel tied the game at 10-all with a 8-0 run of their own lead by a couple of three-point baskets by Charise Billingsley and Joy Hairston and a put back basket by Shanta Ramdhanny with 13:34 left in the half.
The Diesel took its first lead of the game at 19-17 on a three pointer by Lakiste Barkus midway through the first half and with 4:00 minutes left to play in the frame the Diesel had their largest lead of the game at 26-21.
The Roadrunners closed out the half with a 7-0 run to regain the lead at 33-30. Freshman guard Monica Gibbs scored four points and Ewalefo added three points.
In the second half, the Runners mounted a 10 points lead with 15:11 left in the game on a three pointer by freshman guard Farren Fox.
The Diesel pulled within four points (61-57) with a 7-0 run at the 8:54 mark. Ramdhanny scored five points while Barkus chipped in with two points.
Pass the midway point of the second half UTSA established its largest lead of the game at 72-61, when Davis connected on two free throws.
With 3:25 left in the game the Diesel’s trimmed the lead to one point (73-72) with a 6-0 run, but the Roadrunners were able to extend its lead back to seven points (80-73) with a 7-1 run on free throws made by Davis.
UTSA sealed the game by hitting five straight free throws and gave the Runners an 85-78 win.
The Roadrunners connected on 21 out of 27 free throws in the second half, while shooting 78 percent from the charity stripe in the same half. UTSA shot 55 percent in the second half and ended the game shooting 47 percent.
UTSA opens its 2005-06 season on the road at the Central Florida Tournament against Big East foe West Virginia at 2:30 p.m.
