UTSA promotes Dionne Phelps to Associate Head Coach

SAN ANTONIO - The University of Texas at San Antonio announced that Dionne Phelps has been promoted from first assistant to associate head men's basketball coach according to Head Coach Tim Carter.

Phelps, who came to San Antonio from Texas State University on Sept. 8, 2003, will continue to assist Carter in recruiting, scouting and game preparation while working with the UTSA frontcourt players.

"Because of his character and experience, Dionne is an integral part of our program and deserves the promotion to associate head coach," Carter said. "He has been a very valuable addition to our staff at UTSA over the last two years. He has over 15 years of coaching knowledge and knows a lot about the Southland Conference and the city of San Antonio."

A San Antonio native and a graduate of Judson High School in Converse, Texas, Phelps came to UTSA after serving as assistant coach at Texas State since 1999.

Prior to his time at Texas State, Phelps was an assistant coach at Baylor University from 1998-99, and at Texas Lutheran University from 1989-98. Schools he has served on staff for have qualified 15 times for post season tournaments.

Phelps played collegiately at Texas Lutheran, and was inducted into the Bulldog Athletic Hall Of Honors in 2002 following a career that saw him earn 1988 Big State All-Conference and All-District, as well as 1989 Heart of Texas All-Conference honors.

While at Judson, Phelps earned district most valuable player honors as well as all-district and all-region mention.

He holds a bachelor of arts degree from Texas Lutheran, and a master's degree in education from Texas State.
