UTSA opens season with 77-61 win over Houston Jaguars

SAN ANTONIO, Texas – The University of Texas at San Antonio women’s basketball team opened the 2005-06 season with a 77-61 victory over the Houston Jaguars at the Convocation Center.

The Roadrunners were led by freshman forward Destiny Brown with 16 points on six of 10 shooting and a team-high seven rebounds. Senior guard Nicole Dunson and senior center Lacy Mingee each added 12 and 13 points, respectively, while freshman guard Monica Gibbs tied Brown with seven rebounds.

The Jaguars were led by Debora Williams' 15 points and Umeki Webb’s 12 points and game-high 13 rebounds.

Houston Jaguars took an early 4-0 lead with 19:25 left in the first half, but UTSA would answer with a 7-0 run, to go ahead 7-4 lead, which they would not give up the rest the game. Mingee led the charge scoring three points, while junior guard Ana Oliveira and Dunson each added a basket.

Mingee’s lay-up with 7:10 left in the frame gave the Runners their a 15 points (30-15), on a 10-0 run led by Mingee who scored six points and Sandefur who added four points.

The Jaguars came within eight points with 13:45 left in the game, but UTSA stretched its lead back to 10 points on a three-pointer by Dunson with 12:13 to go in the game.

Midway through the second half the Roadrunners extended their largest lead of the game to 18 points (68-50) on a 13-5 run, as Dunson connected on her third trey on the evening.

UTSA’s defense clamped down on the Jaguars allowing them to shot 34 percent from the floor and 30 percent from the three-point line.

The Runners shot an impressive 44 percent from the field and 41 percent behind the arc. UTSA out rebounded the Jaguars 49-37.

UTSA continues exhibition play Nov. 13 at the Convocation Center against the Dallas Diesel with tip-off set for 2 p.m.
