LONG BEACH, Calif. - Led by a 26th-place tie from senior John Elizondo, the UTSA men’s golf team finished 10th at the Del Walker Intercollegiate held Thursday-Friday at Virginia Country Club (6,633 yards / par 71).
Elizondo fired a two-over-par 73 Friday to move into a tie for 26th after entering the final round tied for 38th at three-over 145. His 54-hole total of five-over 218 was just five shots out of the top 10 in the tough, 66-player field.
In the team standings, the Roadrunners carded rounds of 296, 297 and 282, the third-best round of the final day, to finish at 23-over 875, just three strokes behind Nevada and UC Santa Barbara for eighth place (872). Lamar cruised to the team title with a 21-under 831 behind individual medalist Dawie VanDer Walt’s nine-under 204. Houston (848), Washington State (853), Colorado State (856), Long Beach State (868) and Texas-El Paso (868) rounded out the top six.
Sophomore transfer Thomas Kearney tied for 30th with a six-over 75-74-70—219, while junior Kitt Thabungkan tied for 36th at seven-over 72-76-72—220. Sophomore Nick Olivarri and junior Matt Johnston rounded out the top five in a tie for 51st (76-72-78—226) and 53rd (80-77-70—227), respectively. Competing as an individual, freshman Kyle Collins tied for 41st at 75-73-74—222.
UTSA opens the spring season at the Rice Intercollegiate on Feb. 6-7.
