UTSA Women's Basketball opens 2005-06 season Monday

SAN ANTONIO - The University of Texas at San Antonio women's basketball team opens the 2005-06 season with an exhibition game against the Houston Jaguars on Monday, Nov. 7, at 7 p.m. in the Convocation Center.

Head Coach Rae Rippetoe-Blair begins her sixth season at  UTSA as the winningest coach in school history, with 81 career wins. Blair's squad finished 16-12 overall and 10-6 in SLC play last season, while advancing to the SLC post season.

UTSA returns seven letterwinners, including two starters, and welcomes eight newcomers. Leading this young team will be senior guard Nicole Dunson, senior forwards Lacy Mingee and Katie Sandefur. Dunson ranked third on the team in scoring averaging 8.5 points per game and led the team in three-point shooting average (39.7 percent). Mingee, a 6-3 center, was second on the team in scoring (8.8 points per game) and led the team in blocks with 27. Sandefur, a 6-0 forward, averaged 6.4 points per game and was second the team with 56 assists.

In last season's meeting between these two clubs, the Jaguars edged out UTSA 63-61 on Nov. 1 in the Convocation Center. Shauna Tubbs led the Jaguars with 11 points and six rebounds. Nicole Brathwaite and Rhonda Price scored nine points, respectively, for the Jaguars. UTSA had four players in double figures with Dunson leading the way with 16 points. Sandefur led the team with 14 boards and added 10 points.

UTSA continues exhibition play when they host the Dallas Diesel on Nov. 13 at 2 p.m. in the Convocation Center.
