UTSA sweeps I-35 Cross Country Challenge crowns

SAN ANTONIO - Led by individual wins from senior Rita Lambert and junior Chris Layman, the UTSA cross country teams swept both titles in convincing fashion at the second annual I-35 Challenge Wednesday afternoon.
Lambert continued to add to her impressive senior resum?, earning her second individual title of the season. The two-time Southland Conference Athlete of the Week led a 1-2-3-4 finish by the Roadrunner women, covering the UTSA Cross Country Course two-mile loop in 11:49.
Layman won his first individual race of the year in leading an impressive blanket finish by the Roadrunner men that hogged the top five spots. The South Plains College transfer clocked a 10:05 for the two-mile trek in just edging sophomore teammate Eric Miller, who crossed in 10:06.
Juniors Veronica Silva and Hope Jimenez and senior Karilyn Petty followed close behind Lambert to secure the women’s victory, finishing second (12:05), third (12:25) and fourth (12:30), respectively. Sophomore Ann Marie Hollowell rounded out the top five scorers in seventh (12:43).
Sophomore Michael Schwartz, senior Justin Pitchford and junior transfer Cornelio Castanon closed out the top five finishers on the men’s side, placing third (10:18), fourth (10:20) and fifth (10:22), respectively.
In the women’s team standings, UTSA scored 17 points for an easy win over Texas “B” (40) and Texas State (75). The UTSA men posted a perfect score of 15 to handle the Bobcats (48).
The Roadrunners travel to Natchitoches, La., for the Southland Conference Championships on Monday, Oct. 31.
