SAN ANTONIO - The 2005 UTSA Women's Tennis Fall Invitational will be held this Friday and Saturday at the UTSA Tennis Center and the Northside Independent School District's Anne Marie Tennis Center and will feature a team tennis format.
Schools participating include UTSA, New Mexico State, Texas State, Texas A&M-Corpus Christi, Texas-Pan American, Tarleton State, Incarnate Word, St. Edward's and Laredo Junior College. Play begins on Friday, Oct. 28 at 9 a.m. at both facilities with all schools participating in doubles action.
UTSA will play all of its matches at home at the UTSA Tennis Center. The Roadrunners have been paced recently by the play of freshmen Karen Scida and Nathalie Wallin.
Scida, a freshman from Argentina, scored three wins last weekend at the Wilson ITA Regional Championships in College Station. She opened with a 6-1, 6-4 win over Erika Iriarte of Texas A&M-Corpus Christi. She then scored a 7-5, 5-7, 6-2 win over Texas Tech's Janet Durham. Scida advanced to the Women's Singles Main Draw with a 7-6, 6-2 win over Houston's Kami Miller, before being stopped 6-2, 6-0 by Baylor's Daniella Covello.
Wallin, a freshman from Sweden, scored ITA Regional wins over Lynley Wasson of North Texas (6-0, 6-2), Yolandi Terblanche of Houston (6-3, 6-2), and against Katja Kovacic of Texas Tech (6-2, 6-3) to reach the Women's Singles Main Draw. She was eventually stopped by defending NCAA singles champion Zuzana Zemenova of Baylor by a 3-6, 6-2, 6-1 count.
Admission is free at both sites.
