COLLEGE STATION - UTSA newcomers Karen Scida and Nathalie Wallin each advanced to the round of 32 at the Wilson ITA Southwest Regional played Oct. 20-23 at Texas A&M University.
Scida, a freshman from Argentina, opened qualifying with a 6-1, 6-4 win over Erika Iriarte of Texas A&M-Corpus Christi. She then scored a 7-5, 5-7, 6-2 win over Texas Tech's Janet Durham. Scida advanced to the Women's Singles Main Draw with a 7-6, 6-2 win over Houston's Kami Miller, before being stopped 6-2, 6-0 by Baylor's Daniella Covello.
Wallin, a freshman from Sweden, scored wins over Lynley Wasson of North Texas (6-0, 6-2), Yolandi Terblanche of Houston (6-3, 6-2), and against Katja Kovacic of Texas Tech (6-2, 6-3) to reach the Women's Singles Main Draw. She was eventually stopped by defending NCAA singles champion Zuzana Zemenova of Baylor by a 3-6, 6-2, 6-1 count.
Scida teamed with Monica Drabkova in doubles play, but came up short by a 9-7 count to Magali Van den Bergh and Catalina Villegas of Northwestern State in the round of 64
The entire UTSA women's team will return to action this weekend, Oct. 28-29, when they host the UTSA Women's Fall Invitational at the UTSA Tennis Center.
