COLLEGE STATION - UTSA's Hetori Chaves, Robin Fernandes, Anthony Portois and Adam Becker each advanced to the round of 64 at the Wilson ITA Southwest Regional played Oct. 20-23 at Texas A&M University.
Chaves opened play with a 6-3, 6-1 win over Andy Narido of Prairie View A&M before falling 6-1, 6-4 to Milan Mihailovic of Texas. Fernandes cruised to a 6-3, 6-0 win over Kris Gloc of Texas Southern, before falling 6-1, 6-1 to Peter Oredsson of SMU. Portois received a bye in the first round, but came up short in a 6-0, 6-2 loss to Bojan Szumanski of Texas Tech. Becker scored a tough 6-3, 4-6, 7-6 win over Bernhard Deusner of Texas, before losing to TCU's Radu Barbu, 6-1, 6-4.
Shaun Michael Stewart lost his first match in the round of 128 by a 7-5, 0-2 (default) score to Joey Farias of Texas A&M-Corpus Christi.
In doubles, a pair of UTSA teams were stopped in the round of 32, as Fernandes and Portois were defeated by Michal Kokta and Matt Brown of Baylor by an 8-4 count, while Becker and Chaves were stopped by Sandy Farquharson and Daniel Omana of Texas-Arlington by an 8-3 score.
