HOUSTON – UTSA senior Rita Lambert’s individual win helped lead the women’s cross country team to the team title at the Buffalo Bayou Invitational held Monday evening. The men finished third behind a 15th-place showing from sophomore Nick Perez in the meet that was scheduled last week as a make-up for teams who missed competition due to Hurricane Rita.
Lambert covered the 4,800-meter course along the shore of Buffalo Bayou near downtown Houston in a time of 18:08.20 to easily win the women’s individual title ahead of Tenley Determan of Texas State (18:19.34).
Four more Roadrunners finished in the top 10 on the women’s side, helping the Roadrunners their first team title of the year. UTSA scored 29 points to edge host Rice (43), Houston (79), Texas State (83), Prairie View A&M (130) and Texas Southern (140).
Junior transfer Hope Jimenez and senior Karilyn Petty finished fourth (18:45.46) and fifth (18:53.09), respectively, while junior Veronica Silva and sophomore Ann Marie Hollowell were ninth (19:13.20) and 10th (19:14.43) to round out the top five.
Perez led the men to a third-place showing with 74 points behind Texas State (16) and Prairie View A&M (60) and ahead of Houston (85) and Texas Southern (129). The Madison High grad trekked the 7,900-meter loop in 27:36.06, just ahead of junior transfer Cornelio Castanon (16th, 27:39.05) and senior Justin Pitchford (17th, 27:41.78). Sophomore Eric Miller and senior Dustin Riedel closed out the top five in 20th (28:12.82) and 21st (28:25.41), respectively.
UTSA stays home to host the I-35 Challenge next Wednesday, Oct. 26, at the UTSA Cross Country Course in the final tune-up for the Southland Conference Championships on Oct. 31, in Natchitoches, La.
