COLUMBIA, S.C. - UTSA senior Hetori Chaves advanced to the quarterfinals of his flight to highlight Roadrunner men's tennis action at the 2005 University of South Carolina Fall Invitational played Oct. 14-16.
Chaves opened play with a default win over Felipe Abreu of Belmont. He scored a 6-2, 7-6 win over Ryan Urba of Coastal Carolina in the second round. He was stopped in the quarterfinals by Sergey Plotnikov of South Carolina State by a 6-2, 3-6, 6-2 count.
UTSA sophomore Adam Becker opened with a singles loss to Roberto Vasques of Gardner-Webb by a score of 6-1, 6-3. Becker rebounded in consolation play to score a default win over Javier Rodriguez of Belmont; and a 3-6, 6-1, 1-0 (8) win over Jon Staton of Wake Forest.
Freshman Andre Moreira opened with a 3-6, 6-4, 6-1 win over Clint Boling of Clemson in the first round of the A-1 Singles Bracket. He was defeated by Seo-Jae Chang of Hampton in the round of 16 by a 6-3, 6-2 count.
The men's tennis team will return to action at the Wilson/ITA Regional in College Station, Texas on Oct. 20-23.
