SAN ANTONIO - The UTSA softball program has released its 2006 schedule, highlighted by 12 home dates, two road doubleheaders at Texas and Texas A&M and two tough tournaments in Stillwater, Okla., and Las Cruces, N.M.
The Roadrunners open their debut season under first-year head coach Lori Cook at the Las Cruces Hilton Invitational on Feb. 10-12. UTSA faces Penn State, an NCAA Regional finalist in 2005, in the opener on Feb. 10. Other opponents in the tournament are Colorado State, Utah, Ohio State and the host team New Mexico State.
UTSA has a doubleheader at Texas A&M, an NCAA Super Regional qualifier last season, on Feb. 15 in College Station, before hitting the road for Stillwater for the Oklahoma State Easton Classic on Feb. 17-19. The Roadrunners meet the host Cowgirls and Creighton, both NCAA Tournament participants last year, on Feb. 17, and then play Wisconsin on Feb. 18 before bracket play on the final day.
UTSA continues its tough, early-season schedule with a doubleheader at national semifinalist Texas on Feb. 21 before heading to Prairie View, Texas, for contests with Prairie View A&M and Texas Southern on Feb. 25.
The Roadrunners open defense of their second consecutive Southland Conference regular season crown at home with a three-game series against Southeastern Louisiana on March 4-5. UTSA steps out of conference play for a home twinbill with future SLC member Texas A&M-Corpus Christi on March 9 before hitting the road for two SLC series at Northwestern State on March 11-12 and at McNeese State, the defending SLC Tournament champions, on March 18-19.
UTSA has home conference series with Stephen F. Austin on March 25-26 and rival Texas State on April 1-2 and a home doubleheader with Houston on April 4. The Roadrunners then travel to Huntsville for a SLC set at Sam Houston State, the 2005 league runner-up on April 8-9, to Thibodaux, La., for three games at Nicholls State on April 14-15 and to Corpus Christi for a return twinbill with the Islanders on April 19.
The final two conference series are at home against Louisiana-Monroe (April 22-23) and Texas-Arlington (April 29-30) sandwiched around a non-conference doubleheader at Texas Tech on April 26.
The SLC Tournament will be hosted by Northwestern State in Natchitoches, La., on May 5-7.
