Lambert, Layman lead UTSA cross country squads to third-place finishes at Texas State Classic

SAN MARCOS, Texas – Senior Rita Lambert and junior Chris Layman placed second and 13th in their respective races to lead the UTSA cross country teams to third-place finishes Saturday morning at the Texas State Classic held at Gary Job Corps.

Lambert led the women’s 4,800-meter race for the first 4,000 meters and held on for second place behind Landra Stewardson of Texas. Lambert clocked an 18:08 in leading a strong showing by the Roadrunners, just behind Stewardson’s 17:54.

Juniors Veronica Silva and Hope Jimenez were close behind Lambert, finishing 10th (18:36) and 11th (18:38), respectively. Junior Briana Mendez placed 14th in 19:00, while sophomore Ann Marie Hollowell rounded out the top five in 23rd (19:21).

In the team standings, UTSA scored 76 points for third behind Texas (42) and Sam Houston State (53) and ahead of host Texas State (109), Prairie View A&M (167), Texas A&M-Kingsville (170) and Texas Southern (184).

Layman covered the men’s 8k in 27:10 to pace the men to a third-place finish in the team standings, while senior Dustin Riedel was close behind in 16th in 27:16. Junior transfer Cornelio Castanon and senior Justin Pitchford were 25th (27:54) and 26th (28:01), respectively, while sophomore Eric Miller closed out the top five in 30th (28:30).

The Roadrunners scored 86 points for third behind Texas State (24) and Sam Houston State (34). Prairie View A&M (96), Texas A&M-Kingsville (120), Texas Southern (174), St. Edward’s (177) and Palo Alto (210) rounded out the field.
