LUBBOCK - UTSA junior Ana Paula Soto scored two consecutive wins to claim the Flight D Singles championship at the 2005 Texas Tech Scarborough Specialties Open played Sept. 30-Oct. 1 at the McLeod Tennis Center.
Soto's effort highlighted an eventful season-opening effort by the Roadrunners. The Mexico City, Mexico native opened play with a 3-6, 7-6, (10-3) loss to Vicky Michaud of UTEP. Soto bounced back to score a 6-1, 6-0 win over Anastasia Kostrubala of the Air Force, and defeated Natalie McLeod of Texas State, 6-4, 4-6, (11-9) to claim the consolation title.
In Flight A, newcomer Nathalie Wallin advanced to the semifinals with wins over Karissa Walker of Air Force by a 6-2, 6-2 count; and over Samantha van der Drift of Texas Tech, 6-4, 6-1. She dropped a 6-4, 6-3 decision to Cigdem Duru of Texas Tech in the semifinals. In the same flight, Karen Scida of UTSA won her first match by a 6-2, 7-6 count over Lynley Wasson of North Texas, before being stopped by Ashley Ellis of Texas State, 6-1, 6-1.
In Flight B, senior Barbara Mooney and newcomer Monica Drabkova each lost in the first round before advancing to the second round of the consolation bracket.
In doubles, Scida and Drabkova opened Flight Red with an 8-2 win over Karissa Walker and Erika Shortridge of the Air Force Academy, but were defeated in the second round by an 8-3 count at the hands of Megan Schmulbach and Sammie Moreton of North Texas. The UTSA duo later came back to win a consolation bracket with an 8-1 win over Aziza Aba Butain and Katherine Harris of North Texas.
UTSA will return to action when they play at the ITA Southwest Regional in College Station, Texas on Oct. 21-25. The women will host their own Invitational on Oct. 28-29 at the UTSA Tennis Center.
