WACO - UTSA's Hetori Chaves, Adam Becker and Joe Michael Olfindo each reached the quarterfinal of their flight to highlight weekend play at the HEB Baylor Intercollegiate Tournament held at the Baylor Tennis Center.
All three played in the Singles Gold Flight, with each winning their first match. Chaves, a senior for the Roadrunners, scored a 6-1, 5-7, 6-2 win over Mori Eisikovits of Wichita State, before falling to Daniel Omana of Texas-Arlington 6-1, 6-1 in the quarters. Becker defeated Bobby Rasmussen of Santa Clara, 6-3, 7-5, before losing a 6-2, 6-4 decision to Erhart Asaad of Texas A&M-Corpus Christi. Olfindo won by a 6-1, 6-1 count over Joey Farias of Texas A&M-Corpus Christi, before coming up short by a 6-1, 6-1 count to Ian Vazquez of Texas-Arlington.
Playing in the Green Flight Singles round of 32, UTSA's Brazilian newcomer Andre Moreira scored a draining win over Vladimir Portnov of Baylor by a 4-6, 6-3, 6-1 score. Taking the court less than 30 minutes later, Moreira lost to No. 5 Andrey Kumantsov of Texas A&M-Corpus Christi by a 6-2, 6-1 count.
In main draw doubles, the UTSA tandem of Chaves and Becker teamed to make it to the semifinals following a 8-5 win over Raul Rivas and Andrey Kumanstov of Texas A&M-Corpus Christi. They were stopped, however, in the semifinals by an 8-3 count to Baylor's Lars Poerscheke and Jon Reckewey.
The men will return to action this weekend when they host the UTSA Fall Invitational on Oct. 7-9 at the UTSA Tennis Center.
