Busy non-conference home schedule highlights 2005-06 UTSA Men's Basketball slate

2005-06 Schedule

SAN ANTONIO - The University of Texas at San Antonio men's basketball program will play six non-conference home games in the months of November and December to highlight the 2005-06 slate announced on Tuesday.

"This years schedule will allow us to hopefully gain some momentum at home early in the season," said UTSA head coach Tim Carter, who is beginning his 11th year on the sidelines for the Roadrunners. "The non-conference matchups with Iowa, New Mexico State, Texas A&M-Corpus Christi, Murray State, Jackson State, Texas-Pan American and the Florida International Tournament will certainly help to get us ready by the start of conference play in January."

The regular season will get underway on Nov. 19 with a visit to San Antonio by the Angelo State Rams, followed by a Nov. 23 game with Cameron.

For the first time in school history, UTSA will play the Iowa Hawkeyes on Nov. 26 in Iowa City, Iowa. The Hawkeyes of the Big Ten Conference qualified for the NCAA Tournament last season, losing in the first round to Cincinnati.

The Roadrunners will then play the next four games at home in the Convocation Center as Texas A&M-Corpus Christi (Nov. 30), Murray State (Dec. 3), Texas-Pan American (Dec. 6) and Jackson State (Dec. 11) all make visits. UTSA will be looking to bounce back against both Murray State and Texas-Pan American after both scored wins over the Roadrunners on their homecourt last season.

From Dec. 20 through Jan. 7, UTSA will play six straight road games. On the 20th, the Roadrunners will travel to Las Cruces, N.M. for a rematch with New Mexico State, a team that UTSA defeated 81-74 in overtime in San Antonio last season.

UTSA will play in the Florida International (FIU) Tournament in Miami, Fla. against Cal State Fullerton in the first round on Dec. 27, and either FIU or St. Bonaventure in the second on Dec. 28. The Roadrunners won the FIU Tournament title in 2001.

The final non-conference game will be played at Texas A&M-Corpus Christi on Jan. 2. The Roadrunners and Islanders have split the previous two games played between the schools.

Southland Conference (SLC) play will open on Jan. 5 with UTSA traveling to Hammond, La. to play defending conference champion Southeastern Louisiana. The Lions lost in the first round of the 2005 NCAA Tournament to Oklahoma State.

Eight of the conference matchups will be played at the Convocation Center with appearances by Louisiana-Monroe (Jan. 14), Sam Houston State (Jan. 19), Nicholls State (Feb. 2), Southeastern Louisiana (Feb. 4), McNeese State (Feb. 9), Lamar (Feb. 11), Stephen F. Austin (Feb. 23) and Northwestern State (March 3).

The SLC Tournament will be played at home sites from March 7-12, with the winner earning an automatic bid to the NCAA Tournament.

UTSA also announced that all games will once again air live on KKYX Radio 680-AM in San Antonio as well as on the world wide web at www.goUTSA.com.
