SAN ANTONIO – There were no signs of a10-day layoff as senior Jennifer Emelogu turned in five blocks and junior Meagan Daniel (right) posted 11 kills to help lead the UTSA volleyball team to a 30-16, 30-17, 30-20 victory over Nicholls State Friday night in front of 340 fans at the Convocation Center.
With the win, the Roadrunners even their Southland Conference record at 2-2 and improve to 5-6 overall in their first match since a Sept. 20 loss at Stephen F. Austin. The Lady Colonels fall to 0-5 and 0-4.
Emelogu’s five blocks led solid net work by the Roadrunners as they recorded 10 as a team. Junior Connie Picard had three total blocks, including a team-high two solos, while junior Brittany Hildebrand added three block assists.
Daniel led an offensive attack that hit .375 as a team compared to .010 for Nicholls State. Picard added seven kills in hitting .353 for the match, while Emelogu, Hildebrand and redshirt freshman Victoria Prior pitched in with five kills apiece.
UTSA wasted little time building a big lead in game one, jumping out to a 15-6 lead behind a strong block. The Colonels never got closer than nine the rest of the way as the Roadrunners cruised to the 30-16 victory behind five team blocks and a .375-.000 advantage in hitting.
Game two looked like a carbon copy as UTSA again built a huge lead out of the gates at 14-8. Nicholls State got as close as five at 15-10, but an 11-5 run helped the Roadrunners put away the Colonels, 30-17.
Nicholls State overcame a 6-0 deficit to start game three and eventually took its first lead at 12-11 on a kill by Casey Wirwille. The Colonels kept the lead briefly but the Roadrunners broke a 15-all tie with a 7-2 run in grabbing a 22-17 advantage. More strong blocking from Emelogu and Hildebrand put a stamp on the 30-20 victory as UTSA took the match in three, its fourth sweep of the year.
The Roadrunners host Southeastern Louisiana on Saturday at 4 p.m. at the Convocation Center.
