UTSA Cross Country Invitational cancelled

SAN ANTONIO - The University of Texas at San Antonio announced Wednesday that the 2005 UTSA Cross Country Invitational has been cancelled due to the emergence of Hurricane Rita on the Texas coast. There will be no makeup date.

The Invitational was scheduled for Friday, Sept. 23 with the college/university races, and Saturday, Sept. 24 with the high school division races. Over 3,000 high school runners were expected to compete on Saturday.

"We did not want to put the runners, coaches and spectators in a precarious position by running the Invitational this weekend with the approaching Hurricane," said James Blackwood, Invitational director and head women's track coach at UTSA. "We have so many participants from the Texas coast and from other South Texas counties that we wanted to get the word out early so that those people can make their weekend plans accordingly."

Despite the cancellation, UTSA will play host to the 2005 UIL Region IV Cross Country Championships on Nov. 5 at the UTSA cross country course.
