SAN ANTONIO - UTSA freshman Andre Moreira began his collegiate career in fine fashion by winning the men's open singles division championship at the United States Tennis Association (USTA) Texas Adult Sectionals in competition held on Sept. 16-18 at the UTSA Tennis Center and McFarlin Tennis Center.
The Brazilian newcomer scored a 6-0, 6-3 win over Keith Powell in the round of 32; advanced out of the round of 16 with a 6-1, 6-0 win over Sean Straley; scored a 6-0, 6-4 win over Alexandro Furlan in the quarterfinals; defeated Sal Castillo 6-1, 6-1 in the semifinals; and then scored a come-from-behind 3-6, 6-2, 6-3 win over Adrian Valdez in the championship match. Valdez had advanced to the finals following a 6-3, 6-1 win over UTSA's Nate Avila in the semifinals.
In consolation singles, UTSA sophomore Adam Becker (right) claimed the title by winning a 6-0, 6-0 decision over Brian Holmberg.
The Roadrunners also did some damage in doubles as the team of Moreira and fellow freshman Robin Fernandes advanced to the quarterfinals before losing a 6-1, 6-3 decision to the team of Jory Ereckson and Chris Gauthier.
The men will return to action this weekend, Sept. 23-24 at the Baylor Invitational in Waco, Texas.
