BEAUMONT, Texas – Freshman Laura Baker (Victoria, Texas/Memorial HS) fired a four-over-par 76 to force a playoff for individual medalist honors and held lead the UTSA women’s golf team to a third-place finish in its inaugural event Tuesday at the Lady Cardinal Invitational held at Brentwood Country Club (6,060 yards, par 72).
Baker entered the final round one shot behind Jessica Garza of Centenary for the individual lead and came through with a 76 to force a sudden-death playoff between the two. Garza outlasted Baker on the third hole, winning the individual crown with a par four. Baker finished the tournament at eight-over 224 after rounds of 75 and 73 on Monday.
In the team standings, UTSA took third with a 54-hole total of 313-315-310=938. Lamar won the team title with a 303-308-308=919, defeating runner-up Texas State (324-302-303=929) by 10 strokes. Louisiana-Monroe was fourth (967), followed by Sam Houston State (968) and Centenary (991).
Freshman Allie Jordan (Monahans, Texas) was right behind the leaders in a tie for third place at 79-76-73=228. Stephanie Perez tied for 17th (77-83-81=241), Jenna Wessels finished 23rd (82-84-80=246) and Michelle Kowalick placed 32nd (90-83-91=264).
