UTSA Men's Basketball adds three to coaching staff
SAN ANTONIO - The University of Texas at San Antonio men’s basketball program announced the hiring of two new assistant coaches with the addition of Beau Archibald and Lance Madison, while Kyle Kotrla was named administrative assistant/video coordinator for the Roadrunners.
“We have had some outstanding assistant coaches over the years which have played a huge part in the success of our program, and I feel that Beau, Lance and Kyle will each be a great fit with our program,” said UTSA head coach Tim Carter. “We have added a good blend of experience and youth.”
A member of the 1998-99 University of Connecticut national championship men’s basketball team, Archibald comes to UTSA from Jacksonville (Fla.) University where he was an assistant the last two seasons. At Jacksonville, Archibald worked as a recruiting coordinator under storied head coach Hugh Durham, who retired in 2005 with 633 coaching victories. The Dolphins advanced to the semifinals of the Atlantic Sun Conference Tournament last season. He began his coaching career as a student coach at Connecticut in 2000-01, and was later a volunteer assistant at Texas Tech University in 2002-03. Archibald graduated from Connecticut in 2001 with a bachelor of arts degree.
A native of Tempe, Ariz., Archibald began his playing career in 1996-97 at Washington State University, where he was named one of the top-10 freshmen in the PAC-10 Conference. In 1997-98 he played at Utah Valley State College and was named a preseason All-American. From there he went east and played for the Connecticut Huskies, earning a national championship in 1999, that included defeating UTSA in the first round of the NCAA Tournament by a 91-66 count. He concluded his college playing career in 2000, as the Huskies were eliminated in the second round of the NCAA Tournament. Archibald later played professional basketball with the Milwaukee Bucks in their free agent camp, and spent time in the Los Angeles Summer Professional League, with a professional touring team in China, in the United States Basketball League (USBL) with the St. Louis Skyhawks and head coach Lionel Hollins, and with Kouvolan Kouvat in Finland.
Archibald’s basketball bloodlines run deep, as his father Lynn Archibald was a Division I coach for 30 years, including stints as head coach at Idaho State University from 1977-81, and at the University of Utah from 1983-89. He was also assistant at Long Beach State University, University of Nevada-Las Vegas, University of Southern California, Arizona State University and Brigham Young University. His brother Damon Archibald is currently an assistant coach at Iowa State University and had prior experience at USC, Pepperdine University and Fresno State University. Archibald’s brother-in-law is Mark Pope, a seven-year NBA veteran who currently plays for the Denver Nuggets. Pope played and won a national championship at the University of Kentucky under head coach Rick Pitino in 1996.
Madison comes to UTSA from Redlands Community College in El Reno, Okla., where he had been associate head men’s basketball coach and recruiting coordinator since 2002. The Redlands Cougars were NJCAA Division I national runner-ups in 2004 and were ranked No. 1 in the final poll. In three years the Cougars had a combined record of 94-9 that included two Region 2 championships and three Bi-State West Conference championships. Prior to Madison’s time at Redlands he was an assistant coach at Olney (Ill.) Central Community College from 1996 until 2002, leading the Blue Knights to five 20-win seasons and a top-20 ranking for three consecutive seasons. In 1992-93 he was assistant coach at Vincennes University and helped lead the team to the Region 12 championship and national tournament participation. He has also received experience as court coach at the 2001 USA Basketball Olympic Qualifier team trials and as an assistant coach at the NJCAA National Team Trials in 1997.
A native of Vincennes, Ind., Madison played basketball in his hometown at Vincennes from 1988 to 1990 and helped lead the Trailblazers to the NJCAA National Tournament in 1989. From there Madison went to Indiana University-Purdue in Indianapolis, Ind., where he played until 1992, earning a team captain nod in 1991. He graduated from Eastern Illinois University in 2004 with a bachelor of arts degree.
Archibald and Madison were named to replace former UTSA assistants Lloyd Williams and Michael Schwartz. Williams, a former player with the Roadrunners, resigned in June to accept a high school coaching position in Tulsa, Okla., while Schwartz was recently named administrative assistant at the University of Miami.
Kotrla, who worked in the UTSA Athletic Department last season as an intern, graduated in May, 2005 from Texas A&M University with a bachelor’s degree in kinesiology-sports management. He had previously been men’s basketball team manager for three years with the Aggies. During this time he had assisted with camps, equipment and working with Texas A&M’s post players. A native of Rogers, Texas, Kotrla played three years of basketball at Rogers High School, where he graduated in 1999.
