DENTON, Texas – Junior John Elizondo (San Antonio/Brackenridge HS) and sophomore Thomas Kearney tied for ninth place to help lead the UTSA men’s golf team to a fourth-place finish at the Cobb/Ferrell Mean Green Classic hosted by North Texas at Lantana Golf Club (7,147 yards, par 72).
UTSA entered today’s final round in a tie with Houston for second place at one-over-par 577. The Roadrunners carded a 20-over 308 and finished in fourth at 21-over 885. Sam Houston State fired a final-round 298, low for the day, to overtake round-two leader Jacksonville State for the team title. The Bearkats finished 298-280-298=876, three strokes ahead of the runners-up (285-287-307=879). Houston finished third at 293-284-303=880, five shots ahead of UTSA.
Elizondo and Kearney were in a tie for eighth place at one-under 143 through 36 holes. Both turned in rounds of 77 Tuesday and dropped just one spot to ninth at four-over 220. Andrew Ross of Arkansas State won the individual title with a four-under 69-71-72=212.
Junior Matt Johnston (Winnipeg, Manitoba) carded UTSA’s low round of the day, a two-over 74 to finish in a tie for 21st at seven-over 223. Sophomore Nick Olivarri (Converse, Texas/Judson HS) tied for 24th at 74-70-80=224, while freshman Kyle Collins (75-74-80=229) and junior Kitt Thabungkan (76-72-81=229) tied for 46th.
The Roadrunners return to action on Sept. 26-27 when they travel to Newport, R.I., for the Adams Cup of Newport.
