UTSA drops four-game heartbreaker at Texas State

SAN MARCOS, Texas – Senior Julia Hunter (right) and junior Connie Picard led four Roadrunners in double-digit kills but the Texas State volleyball team rallied from an 0-1 deficit to score a 21-30, 31-29, 30-28, 31-29 victory over UTSA on Tuesday night in front of 791 rowdy fans at Strahan Coliseum.

With the win, the Bobcats improve to 2-6 overall and 1-0 in the Southland Conference. The Roadrunners fall to 3-5 and 0-1.

Hunter and Picard recorded 15 kills apiece, while junior Meagan Daniel and senior Jennifer Emelogu added 13 and 10, respectively. UTSA hit .266 as a team for the match, also getting 57 assists from junior DeeDee Strickland and 19 digs from junior Erin McMillan.

Elizabeth Nwoke led a Texas State offense that hit .282 with 15 kills, while Lawrencia Brown and Brandy St. Francis added 13 and 12, respectively.

UTSA controlled game one from the start, building a 10-5 lead out of the gates. Texas State cut it to 10-6 but the Roadrunners answered with a 9-0 run to extend the lead to 19-10. The Bobcats would get no closer than seven the rest of the way as UTSA cruised to a 30-21 victory behind a .382 team hitting percentage.

The hitting percentage fell to .156 in game two compared to .311 for the Bobcats, a 31-29 decision for Texas State. UTSA fell behind early 7-3 but would cut the deficit to three at 10-7. Texas State used a 7-1 run to build a 17-8 lead. The Roadrunners stormed back to make it a game, getting to within two at 20-18. UTSA eventually tied the score at 28-all and negated the Bobcats’ first game point at 29-28. Texas State came through the second time at 30-29 on a kill by St. Francis.

Texas State took leads of 6-0 and 12-6 to start game three, but UTSA rallied to take its first advantage at 15-14. The Bobcats kept it close and finally regained the lead at 24-23. The Roadrunners tied it three more times, the last at 27-all, but Texas State put it away at 30-28 on a kill by Karry Griffin.

Game four was a thriller late as UTSA stormed back from an 18-12 deficit to tie the score at 20-all on a kill by Emelogu. The Roadrunners took their first lead on an attack error at 21-20 and traded leads until the Bobcats took advantage of three questionable calls down the stretch for the 31-29 win.

The Roadrunners return home to host Texas-Arlington on Friday, Sept. 16. First serve is set for 7 p.m. at the UTSA Convocation Center.
