SAN ANTONIO - Senior Julia Hunter (Peoria, Ariz.) and junior Meagan Daniel (Hereford, Texas) turned in nine kills apiece but Eliane Santos recorded 18 kills by herself to help lead the Oklahoma volleyball team to a 30-21, 30-25, 30-20 sweep of UTSA in the final match of the UTSA Dome Rally Sunday evening at the Alamodome.
With the loss, the Roadrunners fall to 3-4 on the season and finish the Dome Rally 0-3. The Sooners improve to 5-3 overall and 1-2 in the tournament.
Hunter and Daniel’s 18 combined kills led a UTSA offense that was held in check by the Sooners all afternoon, hitting just .072 as a team. Santos had 18 kills on 38 swings and hit .368 for the match to lead OU, which hit .286.
Oklahoma held UTSA to a -.025 hitting percentage in game one, a 30-21 decision for the Sooners. OU built a 9-4 lead out of the gates before UTSA rallied to within three at 12-9 behind a strong outside attack from Daniel. The Roadrunners kept it close and trailed by two at 18-16 before the Sooners went on a 9-1 run in extending their lead to 10 at 27-17. A kill from junior Brittany Hildebrand and a pair of service aces from Daniel helped the Roadrunners cut the deficit to six at 27-21, but OU put UTSA away with a pair of kills from Eliane Santos and a ball-handling error.
UTSA took the initial lead in game two at 4-1, but OU quickly rallied to tie it at 4-4. The Sooners then broke open a close game at 18-17 with a 7-2 run behind Santos. Kills from Hildebrand and Daniel and an OU attack error cut the deficit to 25-23, but a 5-2 string that included two more kills from Santos ended the game at 30-25.
OU wasted little time staking claim to a big lead in game three, jumping out to a 9-1 lead. UTSA rallied to within four at 18-14 but the Sooners answered with a run of their own en route to the 30-20 clincher.
In other Sunday action, No. 19 Notre Dame pulled off its second upset of a top-10 team this weekend with a 30-28, 31-29, 30-28 sweep of previously undefeated and No. 6-ranked Florida. The Fighting Irish finished the Rally as the only undefeated team at 3-0. No. 8 Southern California handled No. 13 Texas A&M in four, 30-26, 30-23, 28-30, 30-25, and LSU swept Rice, 32-30, 30-17, 30-20.
The Roadrunners return to action on Tuesday, Sept. 13, when the travel to San Marcos to take on rival Texas State in the Southland Conference opener for both. First serve is set for 7 p.m. at Strahan Coliseum.
