SAN ANTONIO - Junior Meagan Daniel (Hereford, Texas) and senior Jennifer Emelogu (Austin, Texas/LBJ) posted double-digit kills but the Rice volleyball team used a strong block and overcame 21 service errors in a 29-31, 30-25, 30-24, 30-28 victory over UTSA Saturday night during day two of the UTSA Dome Rally at the Alamodome.
Rice improves to 6-1 on the season and 2-0 in the Rally while the Roadrunners fall to 3-3 and 0-2.
Daniel turned in a double-double with 13 kills and 12 digs, while Emelogu had 11 kills and three blocks. Junior DeeDee Strickland (League City, Texas/Clear Creek HS) also registered a double-double with 38 assists and 10 digs, and junior Erin McMillan (San Antonio/Churchill HS) had a team-high 21 digs.
Oyala Pazo led Rice with 17 kills and Jessica Holderness added 14 to lead a Rice attack that .154 for the match. Kristina Hoban posted a match-best 45 assists and Yvette Kirk added 26 digs for the Owls.
Rice stormed out of the gates to a 7-2 lead but the Roadrunners rallied for a 13-12 lead after two kills from Emelogu and a kill by senior Toni Rocheleau (Katy, Texas/Katy HS). The two teams traded leads until Rice took a 27-23 advantage behind a strong attack from Pazo, who posted six kills in the game. UTSA reeled off a 4-0 run to tie it at 27-all thanks to two kills from Daniel and two service aces from junior Connie Picard (Spring, Texas/Spring HS). Another kill by Daniel, who along with junior Brittany Hildebrand (Converse, Texas/Judson HS) finished the game with five kills, and a Rice attack error ended the frame in UTSA’s favor, 31-29.
Rice limited the Roadrunners to a -.025 hitting percentage in a 30-25 game two victory. UTSA controlled most of the game and held a 22-20 lead late, but the Owls turned in a two-point deficit into a five-point win with a 10-3 run to end the game.
The Owls never trailed in game three, a 30-24 win, but UTSA got out to a 13-10 lead to start game four. Rice rallied to tie at 14-all on a kill by Holderness. UTSA again built a lead at 25-22 only to have Rice take a 27-25 lead with a 5-0 run. A kill and an ace from Daniel knotted the score at 27-27, but Rice pulled away for the win on a kill by Karyn Morgan, a UTSA attack error and a kill by Tessa Kuykendall.
In other Saturday action, No. 13 Texas A&M outlasted LSU in five games, 28-30, 30-17, 30-28, 29-31, 15-13, No. 19 Notre Dame swept Oklahoma, 30-28, 30-27, 30-17, and No. 6 Florida edged No. 8 Southern California in a five-game thriller, 23-30, 30-19, 30-27, 21-30, 15-12.
Sunday’s action gets underway at 11 a.m. with Notre Dame and Florida followed by Texas A&M and Southern Cal at 1 p.m., LSU and Rice at 3 p.m. and UTSA and Oklahoma at 5 p.m.
