CORPUS CHRISTI, Texas – Juniors Connie Picard and Meagan Daniel both posted double-digit kills to help lead the UTSA volleyball team to a 30-14, 30-22, 30-24 sweep at Texas A&M-Corpus Christi Tuesday night at Moody Fieldhouse.
With the win, the Roadrunners improve to 3-1 on the year, while the Islanders fall to 0-1. The 3-1 start is UTSA’s best since the 2000 team that advanced to the NCAA Tournament also started 3-1.
Picard turned in 12 kills and hit .304 for the match, while Daniel posted a double-double with 11 kills (.308 hitting percentage) and a match-high 14 digs. Junior DeeDee Strickland recorded a match-best 27 assists, while Daniel and Picard led UTSA with three block assists apiece.
UTSA jumped out to a 9-3 lead to open game one behind a strong block and middle attack from Picard. The Islanders would cut the deficit to five at 10-5 but would get no closer than that as the Roadrunners pushed the lead to 15 points with a 16-5 run. A couple of service errors and a pair of kills from senior Jennifer Emelogu ended game one at 30-14. Picard posted six kills and three blocks in the game to lead the Roadrunners.
The Islanders hung around for most of game two. After UTSA broke open a close game at 6-5 with an 8-0 run, TAMU-CC answered with a 12-4 run to cut it to 17-15, the last two points coming on service aces by Lauren Carter. The Roadrunners opened up the lead to eight at 25-17 behind a strong attack from Hildebrand and eventually closed out the game at 30-22 on a block from Daniel and redshirt freshman Victoria Prior.
Game three saw both teams trade leads until the Roadrunners used a 7-2 run to take a 25-19 lead. From there, UTSA took advantage of several Islander miscues en route to the 30-24 win.
The Roadrunners return to action this weekend when they host the UTSA Dome Rally on Friday-Sunday, Sept. 9-11, at the Alamodome. UTSA plays LSU on Friday at 1:30 p.m., Rice on Saturday at 7 p.m. and Oklahoma on Sunday at 5 p.m.
