Roadrunner men win UTSA Triangular Relay; women take second
SAN ANTONIO – The UTSA men’s cross country team used strong depth throughout its lineup to defeat Texas A&M-Corpus Christi and Texas State in the UTSA Triangular Relay Friday evening at Olmos Park. The Roadrunner women finished second behind Texas A&M-Corpus Christi.
In the men’s 5xmile relay, Texas A&M-Corpus Christi’s “A” tandem finished first overall in 49:51, but the Roadrunners took second, third and fourth to give them the edge in the final standings. Junior Chris Layman and sophomore Nick Perez combined to run 50:44 for second, while sophomore Michael Schwartz and senior Dustin Riedel placed third in 51:12 and senior Justin Pitchford and sophomore Eric Miller were fourth in 51:47.
“The guys showed that we have a lot of heart and a lot of depth,” head coach Rose Monday said. “Chris Layman had the best splits of 4:55, 5:02, 5:05, 5:10 and 5:02. The great thing is that not only were the guys considerably faster than last year, Michael Schwartz, Nick Perez and Dustin Riedel were within a 15-second gap of each other. Eric Millers’ outstanding sprint at the end to edge Corpus out of fifth place describes the toughness and passion of these guys. I am looking forward to a great season.”
The Islanders also had teams place fifth, sixth, seventh and 10th, while Texas State was eighth, ninth and 11th.
In the women’s 3xmile relay, Corpus Christi had the top two tandems in 34:35 and 35:06, but the three UTSA pairs were right behind. Senior Rita Lambert and junior Hope Jimenez took third in 35:20, followed by seniors Meghan Chance and Karilyn Petty in fourth (35:56) and juniors Briana Mendez and Veronica Silva in fifth (36:11).
“The entire team ran great,” Monday said. “I am really proud of them. We are starting off stronger and fitter than last year. Rita Lambert had mile splits of 5:46, 5:52 and 5:51 and Hope Jimenez, Karilyn Petty and Briana Mendez all averaged under six minute-miles.”
The Islanders’ “C” team was sixth, while Texas State was seventh, eighth and ninth.
The Roadrunners return to action on Sept. 17, when they travel to Houston to compete in the Rice Invitational.
