CHARLOTTE, N.C. – Junior DeeDee Strickland recorded her second straight double-double and junior Brittany Hildebrand (right) led a strong offensive attack with nine kills as the UTSA volleyball team improved to 2-0 on the season with a 30-24, 30-25, 30-25 sweep of Charlotte Saturday at Halton Arena.
Strickland turned in a match-high 27 assists and added 10 digs to help lead a solid all-around performance by the Roadrunners, who are 2-0 for the first time since the 2000 season. Hildebrand hit .400 for the match as UTSA swung at a .222 clip as a team. Senior Julia Hunter and juniors Meagan Daniel and Connie Picard chipped in with eight kills apiece. Junior Erin McMillan posted a match-best 15 digs.
UTSA stormed out to leads of 5-0 and 9-2 to open game one and eventually built a 22-11 lead after a kill by senior Jennifer Emelogu. The Roadrunners kept a big lead up until their first game point at 29-21, only to have Charlotte mount a rally to cut the deficit to five at 29-24. Hunter’s fifth kill of the frame ended any comeback ideas by the 49ers.
Charlotte and UTSA traded leads in game two until the 49ers pulled away for a five-point advantage at 17-12. The Roadrunners fought back to within two at 20-18, but the 49ers kept UTSA at bay with a 22-18 advantage. UTSA then came alive with a 5-1 run to take its first lead at 24-23 on a kill by Daniel. Charlotte hung around but the 11-2 run for the Roadrunners helped them take a 2-0 lead into the intermission.
The Roadrunners broke open a 6-6 game with a 7-0 run to take a 13-6 lead to start game three. UTSA eventually built a 10-point lead at 20-10, but Charlotte was able to cut the deficit to five at 22-17 after a 7-2 run. The 49ers even got as close as three at 26-23 but the Roadrunners closed out the match with a 4-2 run to get their second victory of the tournament.
Abbey Szlanfucht led the 49ers with 15 kills and four blocks.
UTSA plays Middle Tennessee State at 3:30 p.m. Central in what will be the championship match of the round-robin tourney.
