Matt Johnston to compete in U.S. Amateur Championship

SAN ANTONIO - University of Texas at San Antonio golfer Matt Johnston will compete in the 105th United States (U.S.) Amateur Championship this Monday, Aug. 22-Sunday, Aug. 28 in Philadelphia, Pa.

Johnston tees off on Monday at 11:30 a.m. Central time from No. 10 on the Philadelphia Country Club course (6,967 yards, par 70). The 2004-05 Southland Conference Men's Golf Student-Athlete of the Year will look to advance past the first two days of stroke play as the field of 312 will be cut to 64 for the popular match-play format beginning Wednesday at nearby Merion Golf Club in Ardmore, Pa. Johnston completed a rare feat by qualifying for both the U.S. and Canadian Amateur this summer, finishing tied for 103rd (78-76‹154) in the latter.

The U.S. Amateur will have 10 hours of television coverage on The Golf Channel and NBC over the last five days of the championship.
