Wolfe named Hibernia Bank/SLC Men’s Outdoor Track & Field Student-Athlete of the Year; Chance, Dupree, Holmes, McDonald make all-academic team

PLANO, Texas - UTSA junior Bryan Wolfe has been named Hibernia Bank/Southland Conference Men’s Outdoor Track and Field Student-Athlete of the Year, while senior Rosalind Holmes and juniors Meghan Chance, Ryanne Dupree and Ashley McDonald all made the Hibernia Bank/SLC Women’s Outdoor Track and Field All-Academic Team, the league office announced late last week.

Wolfe owns a 3.72 grade point average in actuarial science and is a member of the UTSA Honors Program and Junior Achievement Program and the Huddle Leader for UTSA Fellowship of Christian Athletes. His extracurricular activities also include serving on the Babcock Highway Clean-up project for the UTSA athletics department, public speaking engagements with local elementary schools for the UTSA Honors Program and teaching junior high students about business fields and opportunities.

Wolfe, who also was tabbed SLC Men’s Indoor Student-Athlete of the Year in March, was the league runner-up in the decathlon with 6,730 points at the SLC Outdoor in May. He was the top collegiate finisher (second overall) in the decathlon at the UTSA/Whataburger Relays and later posted an NCAA provisional-qualifying mark of 7,045 points to finish seventh in the decathlon at the Texas Relays. Wolfe was the lone UTSA representative on the men’s all-academic squad.

The quartet of Holmes, Chance (the 2004 and 2005 SLC Women’s Indoor Student-Athlete of the Year), Dupree and McDonald (the 2004 SLC Women’s Cross Country Student-Athlete of the Year) gave UTSA four of the 12 spots on the women’s all-academic team. Ivorita Taylor of Texas-Arlington was chosen as SLC Women’s Outdoor Student-Athlete of the Year.

UTSA completed the 2004-05 academic year with eight of the 17 SLC Student-Athletes of the Year: Kurt Attaway (Men’s Basketball), Meghan Chance (Women’s Indoor Track & Field), Nicole Dunson (Women’s Basketball), Matt Johnston (Men’s Golf), Ashley McDonald (Women’s Cross Country), Jessica Rogers (Softball) and Bryan Wolfe (Men’s Indoor and Outdoor Track & Field). No other conference school had more than two honorees (Northwestern State and Texas State).

The all-academic team honors student-athletes who were named as a national all-academic recipient this year while also earning at least a 3.00 grade point average. Remaining spots on the all-academic teams are then voted on by the head coaches, sports information directors and academic/compliance administrators. Student-athletes must have completed one full academic year at the nominating institution and participated in at least 50 percent of the team’s competition.

The student-athlete of the year is annually presented to the individual in each conference sport who achieves excellence in academics, athletics and community/campus service. Nominees shall have earned at least a 3.2 cumulative grade point average to go along with superior athletics achievement.
