Rogers named Hibernia Bank/SLC Softball Student-Athlete of the Year; Davis earns academic nod

PLANO, Texas - UTSA junior Jessica Rogers has been named Hibernia Bank/Southland Conference (SLC) Softball Student-Athlete of the Year for the second straight season, while senior Jennifer Davis also earned a spot on the SLC All-Academic Team for the second consecutive year.

Rogers (pictured right), the Southland Conference Player and Hitter of the Year, boasts a 3.82 grade point average (GPA) in kinesiology and was named UTSA’s Female Academic-Athlete of the Year for the second straight year in April. She also was voted to the ESPN The Magazine Academic All-America Softball Team earlier this month and has been a member of the Dean’s List four times.

On the field, Rogers set SLC single-season records for home runs (23) and runs batted (64) and was voted first team all-conference for the third consecutive year at third base. She won her second career NCAA statistical crown this spring with a national-best 0.38 home runs per game as the two-time NFCA All-South Region pick launched 23 long balls in 60 games. She also ranked third in RBI per game (1.07), 15th in slugging percentage (.783) and 20th in the toughest-to-strike-out category (20.3), a stat she led the NCAA in last season. Rogers finished her junior campaign with a .384 batting average, 78 hits, 45 runs and a .416 on-base percentage for the 42-18 SLC regular season champion Roadrunners.

Davis (left), a first team all-region and all-conference selection in the outfield, completed her undergraduate degree in marketing in May with a 3.41 GPA. She led UTSA in batting average with a .400 mark — the second-best season on school record — and recorded 78 hits, 46 runs, 12 home runs, 45 RBI, a .662 slugging percentage, a .432 on-base percentage and six stolen bases. A three-time SLC Hitter of the Week, Davis also made the ESPN The Magazine Academic All-District VI Softball First Team and the All-SLC Tournament Team.

The all-academic team honors student-athletes who were selected as a national all-academic recipient this year while also earning at least a 3.00 grade point average. Remaining spots on the all-academic teams are then voted on by the head coaches, sports information directors and academic/compliance administrators. Student-athletes must have completed one full academic year at the nominating institution and participated in at least 50 percent of the team’s games at the position in which they are nominated.

The student-athlete of the year is annually presented to the individual in each conference sport who achieves excellence in academics, athletics and community/campus service. Nominees shall have earned at least a 3.2 cumulative grade point average to go along with superior athletics achievement.
