Voyles, McKennon named to Hibernia Bank/Southland Conference all-Academic baseball team

SAN ANTONIO – University of Texas at San Antonio second baseman J.R. Voyles and leftfielder Michael McKennon have named to the 2005 Hibernia Bank/Southland Conference all-academic team as announced this week by the league office.

Voyles (pictured right) and McKennon, who both played vital roles on the Roadrunners’ Southland Conference Tournament championship team this season, join nine other SLC baseball student-athletes as members of the team.

Voyles, an architecture major, had a breakout season at the plate this year in helping UTSA advance to an NCAA regional for the first time since 1994. He ranked second on the team with a .308 batting average and slugged six home runs. He was also successful on all nine stolen base attempts in 2005.

McKennon (left), who excelled in the classroom as a business major, was almost flawless manning the green in left field, making only two errors. He batted .270 with 13 doubles and three home runs, including a round-tripper in the NCAA regional at Waco. In two seasons, he already ranks in the top 10 in career doubles at UTSA.

The all-academic team consists of players who were named all-conference and/or named to a national all-academic team for the 2004-2005 year. Award recipients must have compiled a 3.0 or higher grade point average. The remaining spots were then voted on by head coaches and sports information directors.

Southeastern Louisiana’s Ryan Spencer was named the baseball Student Athlete of the Year. Also on the team were Bobby Barbier, Blake Jones and Michael Palermo from Northwestern State, Daniel Raymond from Louisiana-Monroe, Josh McSpadden and Grant Varnell from Texas-Arlington, Michael Ambort from Lamar and Jacob Marceaux from McNeese State.
