UTSA signs four to National Letters of Intent

SAN ANTONIO - The University of Texas at San Antonio men's tennis program and head coach Dr. Oliver Trittenwein touched four countries in announcing the signing of four incoming freshmen to national letters of intent for the 2005-06 season.

Signing with the Roadrunners are South African Robin Fernandes, Brazilian Andre Moreira, Canadian Shaun-Michael Stewart and native Texan Mark Vennerholm.

Fernandes, a native of Edenvale, South Africa, will be coming to San Antonio after earning a No. 3 ranking in singles and a No. 4 in doubles in his home country. At Edenvale High School he was a team captain and a provincial representative for five years.

Moreira is rated as one of the top five juniors in Brazil and the last two years has been a member of the Amil Tennis Program, which is Brazil's top team. He has been coached by Ricardo Acioly, a former Davis Cup captain for Brazil. Ranked No. 2 in the state junior ranking in both singles and doubles, Moreira has a No. 7 singles rank nationally, No. 6 in doubles.

Stewart will be coming to San Antonio from A.B. Lucas Secondary School in London, Ontario, Canada where he is ranked No. 2 in his province in singles, and in the Canadian top-15. As a senior he earned Athlete of the Year and Most Valuable Player awards at Lucas, while also being the district champion.

Vennerholm is a native of Sanger, Texas, but spent the last year at the Nick Bollettieri Tennis Academy in Florida. Prior to his time at the Academy he played at Denton (Texas) Liberty Christian School where he competed in Texas' Boys 18 Super Champion Division and advanced to the semifinals of the 2004 State Tournament as a junior.

"I am pleased with our signees and what they bring to our program for the future," Trittenwein said. "Bringing in four freshmen will give our team youth and a nucleus will can build around in the future."
