PLANO, Texas - A recent all-Southland Conference selection for his play on the court, UTSA junior Jonas Hoglund received another honor on Wednesday when he was named to the 2005 Hibernia Bank/Southland Conference Men's Tennis All-Academic Team.
Hoglund, a native of Stockholm, Sweden, had earned his second all-conference honor this year with a second-team showing at No. 4 singles. He went 8-6 in singles play and tallied a 10-10 doubles mark at the No. 3 flight. Hoglund had a 3.19 grade point average and is majoring in economics at UTSA.
Southeastern Louisiana University led all schools with two selections on the All-Academic Team, while Jeremy Salvo of the University of Texas at Pan American was selected the Hibernia Bank/SLC Student-Athlete of the Year in the sport.
The all-academic team honors student-athletes who were selected all-conference and/or named as a national all-academic recipient this year while also earning at least a 3.00 grade point average. Remaining spots on the all-academic teams are then voted on by the head coaches, sports information directors and academic/compliance administrators. Student-athletes must have completed one full academic year at the nominating institution and participated in at least 50 percent of the team’s matches at the position.
The student-athlete of the year is annually presented to the individual in each conference sport who achieves excellence in academics, athletics and community/campus service. Nominees shall have earned at least a 3.2 cumulative grade point average to go along with superior athletics achievement.
Salvo is the first player from Texas-Pan American to be tabbed the SLC student-athlete of the year in men’s tennis and receive all-academic recognition twice. He was a second team All-SLC selection in 2005 at No. 2 singles and was awarded the Lou Hassel Award for the highest grade point average among all UTPA male student-athletes. A double major in business administration and finance, Salvo graduated with a 3.79 GPA and was one of three students at UTPA to be honored by the College of Business Administration with the Academic Deans’ Outstanding Service Award. He also held the position of treasurer on the school’s student-athlete advisory committee.
Paul Birkett and Olivier Nussbaum are the two SLU Lions on the six-member team with Birkett one of three netters returning as an all-academic pick for the second year in a row. UTPA’s Salvo and Texas-Arlington’s Ian Vazquez are the other two.

Nussbaum, who hails from Kingershein, France, played throughout the year at the top of both the Lions’ singles and doubles draws. He compiled an 11-10 record at Nos. 1 and 2 singles and finished the season with a 13-4 doubles mark with teammate Julien Lausao.
Texas-San Antonio, Lamar and Texas-Arlington also had representative on the all-academic unit.
Joining Hoglund was Lamar's Kirby, a senior from Neuquen, Argentina, notched All-SLC honors this year after turning in a 12-6 record at No. 2 doubles with teammate Juan Pablo Alatorre. The tandem were the lone Cardinals on the all-conference team.
