NORMAN, Okla. - The UTSA men's 4x100-meter relay team broke a four-year-old school record and four Roadrunners advanced to six different finals to highlight Friday action at the NCAA Midwest Regional Track & Field Championships held at John Jacobs Track & Field Complex.
The foursome of freshmen Cedric Harris and Steven Brown, junior T.R. Sissel and senior Curtis Johnson clocked a 40.15 to finish fourth in their heat of the 4x100m preliminaries. That time eclipsed the school record of 40.27 set in 2001 by Chris Dean, Justin Youngblood, Andis Goble and Francis Ngapout. UTSA had the ninth-fastest time overall and just missed the final field of eight headed by Nebraska's 39.52.
Five Roadrunners qualified for six different event finals in preliminary action Friday evening, highlighted by senior Rosalind Holmes. The Kerens, Texas, native demolished her previous personal best in the 200 meters with a 23.38 into a -0.9 meters/second headwind to finish second in her heat and fourth overall. Holmes also advanced in the 100m with the fourth-fastest time, an 11.65. The 100m final is set for Saturday at 6 p.m., while the 200m final is at 6:45.
Staying on the women's side, junior All-American Ryanne Dupree turned in the seventh-fastest time in the 100m hurdles, a season-best 13.60, to advance to Saturday's 5:30 final. Dupree and Holmes combined with sophomores Morgan Moszee and Lyndsey Sidney to clock a 45.77 for 10th overall in the 4x100m relay, just missing the final.
On the men's side, Johnson advanced to the final in both sprints. The Pampa, Texas, native registered the sixth-best time in the 200m, a 21.28 that was third in his heat, and the seventh-fastest mark in the 100m, a 10.58 for second in his heat. The 100m final is at 5:07 and the 200m is at 6:52.
Sissel circled the track in the 400m hurdles in a personal-best 51.16 to win his heat. The Junction, Texas, native's time was the third-fastest overall and bettered his previous PR of 51.68 by more than half a second.
