Matt Johnston tabbed SLC Men’s Golf Student-Athlete of the Year
PLANO, Texas - UTSA sophomore Matt Johnston has been named 2005 Southland Conference Men’s Golf Student-Athlete of the Year, the league office announced Thursday.
Johnston registered a 76.3 scoring average this spring and turned in a top finish of ninth (nine-over-par 225) at the El Diablo Intercollegiate in Citus Springs, Fla. For the 2004-05 campaign, he turned in a 75.2 stroke average, a top finish of seventh (three-over 219) at the Kansas Invitational and a low round of 69 at the El Diablo. Johnston, who owns a 3.60 grade point average in business, is a member of UTSA’s Student-Athlete Advisory Board and has been involved with the Professional Golf Association as a volunteer.
Jordan Krantz, Marc Campbell and Zack Reeves of Texas-Arlington and Anders Hofvander of Southeastern Louisiana join Johnston on the SLC All-Academic Team.
The Southland all-academic teams, voted on by the head coaches, sports information directors and academic/compliance administrators, honor those student-athletes who earned at least a 3.00 GPA. Student-athletes must have completed at least one full academic and athletic year at the nominating institution prior to the season in which the nomination occurs and competed in at least 50 percent of the contests during the most recently completed season.
In just the third year of existence, the student-athlete of the year award is presented annually to the top student-athlete in each conference sponsored-sport. The award winner must have earned a 3.5 cumulative grade point average to meet the minimum academic requirement. Athletic standards include superior achievement, having brought significant recognition to the institution and having competed in at least two seasons.
