UTSA eliminated from SLC Tournament by McNeese State, 4-3

HAMMOND, La. – Junior Mel Torres and senior Jennifer Davis collected two hits and an RBI apiece but McNeese State held off the UTSA softball team for a 4-3 victory to eliminate the Roadrunners from the Southland Conference Tournament Sunday at North Oak Park.

With the loss UTSA falls to 42-18 overall, while McNeese State improves to 31-33 and will play Sam Houston State in the championship game at 1:30 p.m.

Jessica Denham allowed three runs on five hits in the win, while sophomore Ursula Mares gave up four runs, two earned, on two hits in falling to 21-8.

UTSA struck first for a run on an RBI-single by senior Jennifer Davis that scored senior Krystal Gibson from third.

McNeese State answered with two runs in the second and third. Jenny Clay drilled a two-run homer to right to give the Cowgirls their first lead in the second. Brooke Brodhead doubled home Courtney Parks with the third run in the third. Brodhead scored on an RBI-groundout to second by Jana James to put McNeese up, 4-1.

The Roadrunners scored a run in both the fifth and sixth innings to pull within one. Junior Mel Torres launched her ninth home run of the year to left field in the fifth and junior Jenny Garcia dropped a two-out single into left field that scored pinch-runner J.J. McQueen with the third run.

UTSA now will await word of a possible at-large bid to the NCAA Regional. The selection show will be Sunday evening on ESPN.
