Baseball drops heartbreaker at No. 10 Baylor, 6-5

Box Score

WACO, Texas - The University of Texas at San Antonio baseball team dropped a heartbreaking 6-5 decision at No. 10 Baylor Tuesday evening as the Bears scored the winning run on a dropped line drive in the bottom of the ninth inning at Baylor Ballpark. UTSA falls to 21-28, while the Bears improve to 31-17.

With runners on first and second in the ninth, Chase Gerdes hit a line drive to center field. Sean Danielson appeared to make the final out of the inning but the ball slipped out of his glove, allowing Kyle Reynolds to score the winning run.

Senior Aaron Rodriguez, who allowed Reynolds to reach on a single, was charged with the loss to fall to 6-4. After opening the year 0-3, Rodriguez had won his last six decisions.

After spotting the Bears a 2-0 lead after two, the Roadrunners surged ahead 4-2 in the third via a Chris Lewis grand slam. Lewis crushed a Jeff Mandel offering over the left field wall for his team-leading eighth home run and 40th RBI. It scored Sean Danielson, Ryan Crew and Stephen Holdren.

UTSA added another run in the fourth inning to make it 5-2 as Lee Todesco singled to lead off and moved to second on a Phillip Allen sacrifice bunt. After Danielson and junior J.R. Voyles walked, Crew collected RBI number 26 with a sacrifice fly to center field to score Todesco.

The Bears trimmed the Roadrunner lead to 5-3 with a single tally in the fifth and added another for a one-run UTSA lead in the sixth. In the fifth frame, Josh Ford singled and later scored on Reid Brees’ single. In the following inning, Kevin Sevigny led off with a triple to right center field and scored as Paul Witt lifted a sacrifice fly to center field.

The Bears pounced on the Roadrunners in the first inning for two runs. Kyle Reynolds reached on a single and scored as Josh Ford smashed a triple into the left field corner. Ford trotted home on a sacrifice fly to center field off the bat of Zach Dillon.

Steven Vasquez made his second consecutive start against a Big XII opponent. He tossed six innings and allowed eight hits but just four runs.

McKennon paced the Roadrunners with a 3-for-5 effort as UTSA collected eight hits. The Bears were led by Paul Witt with three hits.

The Roadrunners will be idle for the next 10 days for final exams, then return to host Lamar in a three-game series on May 13-15.
