Demons rally for 5-4 win over Baseball

Box Score

NATCHITOCHES, La. – The University of Texas at San Antonio baseball team opened up a 4-0 lead in the first inning Sunday at Northwestern State, but the host Demons pecked away at the lead and rallied for a 5-4 win over the Roadrunners at Brown-Stroud Field.

UTSA fell to 21-27 overall and 12-9 in the league, while the Demons improved to 34-15 and 16-4 in the SLC.

UTSA starter Caleb Barton pitched seven innings and allowed just six hits while striking out two. He was relieved in the eighth by junior Noah Tritz, who made his second appearance in as many games. Tritz allowed an RBI double in the eighth inning, and Barton was tagged with the loss to fall to 3-7.

NSU starter Dereck Cloeren allowed the four runs in the first but then surrendered just three hits and no runs over the final eight innings to improve to 7-3. He struck out seven.

The Roadrunners put a four-spot on the scoreboard in the first inning, notching all four unearned runs with two outs. Ryan Crew reached on an error and moved to second on Stephen Holdren’s single. Crew scored as Chris Lewis laced a single up the middle.

After Michael McKennon walked, Ryan Saltzgaber pushed a two-run double down the left field line to plate Lewis and McKennon. Lee Todesco then hit an infield single up the middle to score McKennon, and Saltzgaber was gunned down trying for the fifth run of the inning.

The Demons lowered the UTSA lead to 4-1 in the second inning. Bobby Barbier led off with a double down the right field line and scored on Casey DeRosa’s single to center field. NSU then trimmed another run off to make it 4-2 in the third as Rusty Jones singled and later scored on a Roadrunner fielding error.

In the sixth, the Demons added another run as Brandon Morgan tripled to the wall in right center field and scored on Blake Jones’ ground out. NSU completed its rally in the seventh to tie the game at four and scored the go-ahead run in the bottom of the eighth on an RBI double.

Saltzgaber went 2-for-3 with two RBIs to lead the Roadrunners, while Jones and Marty Dewees had a pair of safeties to pace the Demons.

The Roadrunners will be back on the road Tuesday at nationally-ranked Baylor. The first pitch in Waco is scheduled for 6:30 p.m.
