Brooks punches regional ticket with 800m victory at Rice Twilight Complete Results
HOUSTON – UTSA sophomore Larry Brooks punched his ticket to the NCAA Midwest Regional with a winning performance in the 800 meters to highlight action for a partial squad of Roadrunners Saturday at the Rice Twilight held at Rice Track/Soccer Stadium.
Brooks posted an NCAA regional qualifying and season best time of 1:49.85 to win the Gold division of the 800m and solidify his spot in the regional meet in late May. The USA Junior All-American and 2004 Southland Conference champion easily beat Rice’s Pablo Solares (1:51.96) to the finish line for his second straight win. Brooks had just missed the regional standard of 1:50.40 by less than 0.30 seconds in each of his last three races.
In other action, freshman Luke Johnson came close to matching his school record of 161-8 in the hammer throw with a fourth-place, 159-10 effort. The Amarillo native also finished fifth in the shot put (51-3) and discus (148-4).
The Roadrunners will take next weekend off in preparation for the SLC Outdoor Championships on May 13-15 in Huntsville, Texas.
