UTSA takes series with 10-1 win at Texas-Arlington; sets up SLC showdown with Sam Houston State next weekend in San Antonio

Box Score

ARLINGTON, Texas – Senior Jennifer Davis and junior Amanda Horton both collected three hits to lead the UTSA softball team to a 10-1 win over Texas-Arlington Sunday afternoon at Allan Saxe Field.

With the win, the Roadrunners improve to 37-16 overall and 18-5 in the SLC. The Mavericks fall to 17-24 and 13-13. UTSA, which is 31-6 over its last 37 league contests, remains in second place in the conference pending first place Sam Houston State’s (18-4) Sunday contest at Northwestern State. Win or lose UTSA can win its second straight regular season title with two victories in next weekend’s three-game series against Sam Houston in San Antonio.

Davis was a triple shy of hitting for the cycle, going 3-for-4 with her career-high 12th home run of the season, a double and two runs batted in. Horton was 3-for-4 with three RBI as she slugged her fifth home run of the season, all coming in the last 11 games. Sophomore Aimee Murray and juniors Jessica Els and Stacey Gillespie contributed two hits apiece.

With the two home runs, UTSA increased its NCAA-leading total to 94 and stands just seven short of last year’s SLC record 101 long balls.

Sophomore Ursula Mares improved to 18-7 on the season, allowing just one run on three hits in four innings of work. Jill Garro gave up seven runs on nine hits over two-plus innings in falling to 12-13.

The Roadrunners chased Garro early, touching her up for six runs on nine hits in their first three at-bats. With two outs in the first, Rogers doubled to left center and scored on a single through the right side of the infield off the bat of Murray. Davis then doubled home Murray to put UTSA up 2-0 after one.

Following a scoreless second, the Roadrunners opened the top of the third with a walk to Rogers and four consecutive singles from Murray, Davis, Els and Horton to go up 6-0 and run Garro for reliever Elizabeth Fuentes. A hit batter, a strikeout and a walk loaded the bases with one out for junior Mel Torres’ sacrifice fly to deep center that plated Horton with the seventh run.

UTSA tacked on three more in the fourth on Davis’ solo home run to right and Horton’s two-run bomb high over the left center field fence that scored Els, who reached on a single.

UTA broke through for a run in the bottom of the frame as April Cloughtery singled to left and scored on a double to left center by Autumn Petrino.

The Roadrunners conclude the regular season with a three-game series against Sam Houston State next Saturday-Sunday, April 30-May 1, at Roadrunner Field.
