UTSA advances to Southland Conference Championship match after marathon 4-3 win over Texas-Arlington
SAN ANTONIO - UTSA's Anthony Portois staved off numerous match points before finally prevailing at No. 2 singles as the Roadrunners scored a 4-3 win over the Texas-Arlington Mavericks and advanced to Sunday's championship match of the Southland Conference Tennis Championships. The five-hour match was played Saturday afternoon at the UTSA Tennis Center.
The Roadrunners improved to 17-6 on the season with the victory, and will now play on Sunday, April 24 at 11 a.m. against No. 1 seed Texas A&M-Corpus Christi, which won by a 4-1 count over Southeastern Louisiana earlier in the morning. It will be the second match this season between UTSA and the Islanders, with Corpus Christi winning 6-1 over UTSA on April 1.
With the match tied at three apiece, Portois was able to score a come-from-behind 4-6, 6-3, 7-6 win over Diego Mattar at No. 2 singles, in a match that lasted three-and-a-half hours. Mattar led 6-5 and and had three match points before Portois rallied to tie the match at six. Portois dominated the tiebreaker, winning 7-1 to clinch the win for the Roadrunners.
UTSA had earlier won the pivotal doubles point, as Hetori Chaves and Portois combined for an 8-3 win over Alberto Agis and Felipe Acosta at No. 2, while Jonas Hoglund and Adam Becker won 8-1 at No. 3 over Niels Buksik and Ian Vazquez.
In singles, the Roadrunners scored wins at No. 3 where Ricardo Almeida prevailed 6-2, 6-0 over Buksik, while Joe Michael Olfindo was victorious at No. 6 by a 6-1, 7-5 count over Felipe Acosta.
