Meghan Chance and Bryan Wolfe named SLC Indoor Track & Field Student-Athletes of the Year
PLANO, Texas - The University of Texas at San Antonio’s Meghan Chance and Bryan Wolfe have been selected the 2005 Southland Conference Indoor Track and Field Student-Athletes of the Year by the league’s awards committee, Southland officials announced today.
The awards are presented to the top student-athlete in each conference-sponsored sport. The winner of the student-athlete of the year award must have earned a 3.2 cumulative grade point average to meet the minimum academic requirement. Athletic standards include superior achievement, having brought significant recognition to the institution and having competed in at least two seasons. The final component of the award is the service requirement. Award winners will have demonstrated significant contribution to his/her campus or community through service.
Chance, a junior distance runner from Reagan High School in San Antonio, has scored points for her UTSA team in both the distance medley relay and 800-meter run in each of the last two SLC indoor championships. This year, she ran the lead leg on the DMR team that finished third with a time of 12:19.68 while placing sixth (2:19.14) in the 800, up two spots from her 2004 finish in the event.
Chance, a Dean’s List honoree every semester at UTSA, carries a 3.96 grade point average in psychology and is a Golden Key Honor Society member. Her extracurricular duties include being the secretary of the UTSA Student-Athlete Advisory Board, a seventh grade Sunday school teacher at Holy Trinity Catholic Church, a volunteer at the San Antonio city-wide “Go Kids Challenge” children’s fitness walk in 2004 and the UTSA Women’s Walk. A participant in the Fellowship of Christian Athletes, Chance has also been a speaker at Community Baptist Church.
Wolfe, a junior with a 3.71 GPA in his actuarial science major, finished third in the heptathlon with 5,014 points at this year’s SLC indoor championship. He improved on his fifth-place finish as a sophomore in the decathlon at the 2004 SLC outdoor meet.
A Raymondville, Texas, native, Wolfe is a Huddle Leader for the UTSA FCA program and he served as a volunteer on the Babcock Highway Clean-up team for the UTSA athletics department. As a member of the UTSA Honors Program, Wolfe has served as a speaker at local elementary schools and through the Junior Achievement Program, spends time teaching junior high students about business fields and opportunities.
