Roadrunners hammer Texas-Pan American, 23-7

Box Score

EDINBURG, Texas – The University of Texas at San Antonio baseball team used a 10-run fifth inning Wednesday at Texas-Pan American and tied a school record with 25 hits, in coasting to a 23-7 victory over the Broncs at Edinburg Baseball Stadium. The 24 runs fell just one short of a school single game record.

The victory, UTSA’s fourth in a row over UTPA, improved the Roadrunners’ record to 17-24. UTPA fell to 12-30.

Senior Stephen Holdren was just a home run shy of the cycle, going 3-for-4 with four RBIs, while freshman Marshal Davis made his first career start and responded by going 3-for-5 and getting his first collegiate hit. Five UTSA batters had at least three hits, and the Roadrunners have now amassed 88 hits against the Broncs in the five meetings this season. Three players scored at least three runs, and UTSA batted around in three separate innings.

Trailing 4-2 entering the fifth, the Roadrunners sent 10 men to the plate and scored seven runs before the first out was recorded. UTSA wound up plating 10 runs in the inning, their largest outburst of the season, and had 15 batters in the inning.

Holdren provided the big stick in the frame with four RBIs on a two-run single and a two-run double. Freshman Tyler Johnson and sophomore Michael McKennon each had two-RBI singles. The Roadrunners also added four more in the seventh, another trio in the eighth and closed the onslaught in the ninth.

UTSA Freshman right-hander Mark Ruffin collected his first career win in relief of starter Blake Brannon, tossing four innings and allowing just two runs. Kelly Casares, who allowed four earned runs in the fifth without recording an out, was tagged with the loss.

The Broncs opened the scoring with a run in the first inning as Louie Alamia singled to lead off and moved to third on J.P. Mackie’s check-swing single to right field. Alamia crossed the plate on Phillip Rodriguez’s ground-out to the right side. A second run was thwarted as senior Chris Lewis gunned down Mackie from right field.

The Roadrunners answered with a run in the third as catcher Robbie Johns laced a single and moved to second when freshman Phillip Allen walked. Sophomore Ryan Saltzgaber then drove home Johns with a solid single to center field.

The Broncs regained the lead, 3-1, in the bottom of the third as Brannon walked the first two hitters, Alamia and Mackie. Two batters later, Cesar Pena singled home Alamia with his second run of the day. Pitcher Mark Rodriguez then singled to left field to plate Mackie.

UTSA trimmed the deficit to 3-2 in the fourth. Holdren led off with UTSA’s 22nd triple of the year and scored on McKennon’s single to right field. But, in the bottom of the inning, the Broncs added another tally for a 4-2 lead.

The Roadrunners will host Southeastern Louisiana this weekend for a three-game series at Roadrunner Field. Game one is scheduled for a 2p.m. first pitch on Friday, April 22
