CORPUS CHRISTI, Texas – The University of Texas at San Antonio baseball team fell victim to a doubleheader sweep at Texas A&M-Corpus Christi Wednesday afternoon. The Roadrunners saw the Islanders score twice in the bottom of the sixth to take a seven-inning game one, 5-3. The Islanders then broke open the nightcap with nine runs in the fifth and sixth innings to score an 11-3 win.
UTSA fell to 13-23 with the defeats, while the Islanders, who took all five meetings with the Roadrunners this year, improved to 27-16-1.
The Roadrunners, who came into game ranked ninth nationally in triples, legged out three more three-baggers to tie the single season record at 20.
In the opener, UTSA rallied from two runs down to knot the contest at 3-3 in the top of the sixth. Redshirt freshman Phillip Allen drew a walk off TAMU-CC starter Wes Nottebart to open the frame. Senior Sean Danielson then drilled his first triple of the year, and the Roadrunners’ 19th as a team, to left field to plate Allen. After Chris Wall relieved Nottebart, junior Ryan Crew knocked in Danielson with the tying run on a sacrifice fly.
UTSA could not sustain the lead, however, as the Islanders drove in two in the bottom of the inning to seal the win. Casey Buaas’s triple plated Ruben Munoz with the first tally, while Buaas scored later on a fielder’s choice.
After spotting the home team a 1-0 lead after two, the Roadrunners countered with a run in the third. Sophomore Ryan Saltzgaber reached first after being hit. He came around to score on Allen’s first triple of the year. TAMU-CC regained the lead in the fourth with a pair of runs.
Sophomore Blake Brannon, who leads the Southland Conference with 20 appearances, pitched all six innings in his second start of the year. He allowed eight hits and struck out four, but was tagged with the loss to fall to 0-2. Wall picked up the relief win to go to 2-0. The Roadrunners were held to just three hits
In game two, UTSA quickly jumped on top 1-0 as the first batter, Danielson, hit his second triple of the day and then came home on the same play as a throwing error on TAMU-CC allowed the ball to sail into left field.
The Islanders got a home run to lead off the second to tie the game at two and added another run for a 2-1 advantage in the third. The home team then busted the game open in the fifth, batting around and scoring five runs for a 7-1 lead.
UTSA got one back in the sixth as senior Eric Moreno scored Crew, who had doubled earlier, with a sacrifice fly. Leading 7-2, Islanders notched four more runs in the sixth for an 11-2 lead. For the game, UTSA tallied eight hits
Sophomore Steven Vasquez made his first start since the final game of the 2004 season. He pitched into the fifth inning and struck out three before being charged with his first loss of the year. Vasquez only allowed three hits. Josh Ruffin, Brian Pope and Mark Ruffin finished the game on the mound for UTSA.
Islander right-hander Adam Bruce fanned nine in getting the complete game decision.
At the plate on the day, Allen went 2-for-3, while Crew went 2-for-4 in game two. Freshman Tyler Johnson collected two hits in the nightcap, while Danielson went 2-for-6 on the afternoon.
The Roadrunners will be at home this weekend for a three-game league series with Texas-Arlington. Game one is set for Friday, April 15 at 3 p.m. at Roadrunner Field. Saturday’s game is scheduled for a 2 p.m. first pitch, while the finale is Sunday at 1 p.m. -UTSA-
