UTSA wins two of three matches over the weekend ULL 7, UTSA 0 | UTSA 7, Nicholls St. 0 | UTSA 6, Southern 1
LAFAYETTE, La. – Readying themselves for the upcoming Southland Conference Tennis Championships, the UTSA men's tennis team played three matches this weekend, losing 7-0 to Louisiana-Lafayette on Saturday, before rallying to score a 7-0 win over Nicholls State on Saturday, and a 6-1 win over Southern on Sunday, with all three matches played at the University of Louisiana-Lafayette.
UTSA is now 13-6 overall and 3-2 in conference play. The Roadrunners have only one more match remaining in the regular season, as they will host Southeastern Louisiana this Saturday, April 16 at 12 p.m. The SLC Championships will be held on April 22-24 at the UTSA Tennis Center.
Louisiana-Lafayette dominated in Saturday's first match, starting with a sweep of the doubles, and ending with wins at every singles position in straight sets.
In the win over Nicholls State, UTSA won in straight sets in all singles matches, while also dominating in doubles. Seniors Dennis Andrade and Ricardo Almeida combined for an 8-1 win at No. 1 doubles, while Hetori Chaves and Anthony Portois won 8-3 at No. 2, and Jonas Hoglund and Adam Becker coasted to an 8-2 win at No. 3.
In singles, Andrade won 6-4, 6-1 over Sebastian Normand at No. 1; Portois prevailed in a 7-5, 6-4 win over Alex Silav at No. 2; Hoglund coasted to a 6-0, 6-0 win over Fabien LeFranc at No. 3; Joe Michael Olfindo won 6-0, 6-1over Denis Borisevich at No. 4; Becker scored a 6-0, 6-2 win over Shaun Ranger at No. 5; while Chaves closed the sweep with a 6-0, 6-0 win over Brandon Fredrick at No. 6.
In the 6-1 win over Southern, UTSA won all the matches except for two defaults due to injury. The Roadrunners claimed the doubles point as Portois and Chaves won at No. 1 with a default win over David Ensignia and Alex Hidalgo, while Becker and Olfindo combined for an 8-2 win over Justin Worthy and Christopher Williams.
Due to an injury to Andrade, UTSA was defaulted in No. 6 singles, but won all the rest of the matches in straight sets. Almeida scored a 6-3, 6-2 win over Gregory Pipkins at No. 1; Portois won 6-2, 6-4 over Hidalgo at No. 2; Chaves won at No. 3 by a 6-3, 6-2 count over Worthy; Olfindo rolled to a 6-3, 6-0 win at No. 4 over Williams; while Becker won 6-3, 6-3 at No. 5 over Paul DeRouselle.
