THIBODAUX, La. – The University of Texas at San Antonio baseball team ran out of fire power on Sunday afternoon as the Nicholls State Colonels scored a 2-0 win over the Roadrunners in the finale of the three-game Southland Conference series at Didier Field.
The Roadrunners fell to 13-21 and 7-5 in the league as they could not find an answer for NSU redshirt freshman starter Justin Breaux. Breaux tossed 6.2 innings, allowing five hits, but he struck out five and coaxed nine Roadrunners to be stranded. Breaux also got UTSA to ground into two double plays on the day. Ray Labat pitched the final two frames for his first save as the Colonels ended a seven-game losing streak.
Roadrunner starter Caleb Barton dropped the tough-luck contest as he allowed just two runs and set a career high with six strikeouts in going all eight innings. The UTSA junior college transfer fell to 2-5 for his career.
Nicholls State struck for its only two runs in the second inning as Keith Delahoussaye singled and scored on Thomas Bourne’s triple to the right field corner. Bourne continued on home and scored as the throw to third got away from sophomore Ryan Saltzgaber.
The Roadrunners had the bases loaded twice – in the fourth and seventh innings – but could not plate a run.
Senior Sean Danielson and junior Ryan Crew both went 2-for-4 at the plate to lead UTSA. Bubba Bell and Michael Muscato had two hits apiece for NSU.
The Roadrunners will travel to Corpus Christi this week for a Wednesday doubleheader, UTSA’s only twinbill of the year, that begins at noon.
